De oorspronkelijke versie is van Judy Collins. Zij nam het nummer in 1968 op nadat ze het nummer had horen spelen door Canadese folkzanger Rolf Kempf. Alice Cooper leerde het nummer echter kennen via zijn producer en maakte er een rockanthem van.
