Nadat Madonna het nummer Ain’t No Big Deal laat horen bij platenmaatschappij Sire krijgt de zangeres haar eerste platencontract. Everybody is daarna de eerste single en binnen een jaar is ook haar titelloze debuutalbum een feit.

In 1984 staat Madonna voor het eerst in de Top 40 met Holiday, een single die later nog twee keer in de Top 40 zou komen. In 1985 scoort Madonna haar eerste nummer 1-hit met Into The Groove, waarna ook Who’s That Girl (1987), Hung Up (2005), 4 Minutes (met Justin Timberlake, 2008) en Give It 2 Me (2008) op nummer 1 komen.

Madonna wordt ook wel de almaar transformerende Queen of Pop genoemd en is de best verkopende vrouwelijke artiest aller tijden.Volgens Warner Bros Records heeft Madonna meer dan 250 miljoen albums verkocht.

Met een totaal van 55 singles staat de zangeres tot en met 2012 in de Top 40 genoteerd, destijds een record. Ook weet ze daarmee de meest succesvolle Top 40-act ooit te zijn. Madonna schrijft 25 keer een Alarmschijf op haar naam. Later evenaart Rihanna dat aantal en wordt tevens de meest succesvolle Top 40-act.

In 2015 verschijnt haar dertiende studioalbum, Rebel Heart, waarvan Living For Love en Ghosttown de eerste singles zijn.

In 2019 komt Madonna met een nieuw album, Madame X. De eerste single, Medellín, wordt geproduceerd door Mirwais en is een samenwerking met Maluma.
