Zanger, tekstdichter, danser en entertainer, geboren op 29 augustus 1958 in Gary, Indiana. Hij is de zevende zoon van Joe en Katherine Jackson.

In het begin van de jaren zestig treden Tito, Jermaine en Jackie op onder de naam The Jackson Family. Rond 1964 voegen Michael en Marlon zich bij het trio en de naam wordt omgedoopt in The Jackson 5.

In 1978 is Michael te zien als vogelverschrikker in de filmmusical The Wiz. In 1985 schrijft hij samen met Lionel Richie We Are The World voor USA for Africa, een benefietsingle voor de noodlijdende bevolking van Ethiopië.

In 1988 wordt zijn autobiografie Moonwalk (genoemd naar zijn karakteristieke danspasje) verfilmd. Op 20 maart 1991 tekent hij met Sony Software een contract ter waarde van 1 miljard dollar.

Getrouwd met Lisa Marie Presley (1994-96), dochter van Elvis Presley, en verpleegster Debbie Rowe (1996-98). The King of Pop overlijdt op 25 juni 2009 op 50-jarige leeftijd in zijn woning in Los Angeles aan een hartstilstand. Later blijkt uit een autopsierapport dat hij aan een overdosis van de pijnstiller Demerol is doodgegaan.

De zanger scoort in 1983 zijn grootste hit in de Top 40 met Billie Jean. Die single verschijnt kort na zijn overlijden opnieuw in de Top 40. Vijf jaar na zijn dood verschijnt het album Xscape met daarop nog nooit uitgebracht materiaal. Op Love Never Felt So Good, het eerste nummer van het album, is ook Justin Timberlake te horen. Het wordt de vierde postume hit in de lijst en zijn 51e notering - een record, want geen andere soloartiest scoorde zo vaak een hit in de lijst.

Van Xscape verschijnt in augustus 2014 de track A Place With No Name. Het nummer is gebaseerd op A Horse With No Name, dat origineel een hit was voor de band America in 1972 en toen de elfde plaats wist te bereiken. Opvallend genoeg was het ook zijn zus Janet Jackson die in 2001 gebruikmaakte van werk van America. Zij gebruikte het nummer Ventura Highway, dat in 1972 in de Tipparade stond.

In juni van 2018 is Michael Jackson te horen op Don't Matter To Me, een van de 25 nummers op het vijfde studioalbum van Drake.
Eind maart 2023 brengt de Noorse dj Kyo een remix uit van de single Say, Say, Say dat Jackson samen met Paul McCartney uitbracht in 1983.

Songinformatie

Man in the Mirror is de vierde single, afkomstig van het album Bad. Het werd genomineerd voor een Grammy Award als Record of the Year, maar won deze niet; het winnende nummer werd namelijk Graceland van Paul Simon. Michael Jackson bedacht het idee van het achtergrond koor, The Winans en The Andrae Crouch Choir waardoor het nummer zijn bekende sound kreeg. Er gaat een gerucht dat de tekst slechts in 'n nacht is geschreven.

Trivia

In de videoclip komt geen enkel beeld voorbij waarin Michael Jackson het nummer zingt (slechts wat foto’s van de zanger worden afgebeeld). De clip laat grotendeels beelden zien van historische gebeurtenissen in de wereld van geweld, wat uiteindelijk leidt tot een nucleaire explosie, waarna het nummer verandert met daarbij beelden die hoop en vrede uitdrukken. De film Moonwalker, uitgekomen in 1988, opent met het nummer "Man in the Mirror".
