Onika Tanya Maraj is geboren op Trinidad en wordt ontdekt door Lil’ Wayne die haar een platencontract aanbiedt. In 2010 verschijnt haar debuutalbum Pink Friday. In het najaar staat ze met Check It Out (samen met Will.I.Am) voor het eerst in de Top 40.
De zangeres wordt in korte tijd ongekend populair. Zo werkt ze samen met niet de geringste namen: Madonna, David Guetta, Justin Bieber, Flo Rida en Drake. In de zomer van 2012 scoort ze haar eerste solohit en wordt Starships (#4) haar grootste hit in de Top 40.
Naast zangeres, schrijfster en tv-presentatrice is ze ook stem-actrice. Zo was haar stem te horen in de vierde Ice Age animatiefilm. Vooralsnog moet in 2014 haar vierde album, The Pink Print, verschijnen. Van dat album verschijnt Anaconda als voorloper. De zangeres staat halverwege augustus samen met Jessie J en Ariane Grande met Bang Bang in de Top 40 en scoort ruim een maand later met Anaconda haar achtste hit.
De zangeres levert een bijdrage aan het album Listen van David Guetta. In het voorjaar van 2015 gaat alle aandacht uit naar die samenwerking met de Franse dj én Afrojack op Hey Mama. In augustus levert ze, samen met Robin Thicke, Back Together af.
In 2016 levert ze een bijdrage aan Side To Side, een nummer op het Dangerous Woman-album van Ariana Grande. Begin 2017 is ze te horen op Run Up, een track van Major Lazer, die haar de elfde Top 40-hit oplevert. In maart rapt ze mee op Swalla van Jason Derulo, dat door Radio 538 wordt uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. Die week ook wordt ze in de Verenigde Staten de vrouw met de meeste top 100-hits op haar naam als ze Aretha Franklin overtreft. Light My Body Up is in het voorjaar een hernieuwde samenwerking met David Guetta. In april is de rapper ook te horen op Kissing Strangers van DNCE, waarna ze een maand later terug te vinden is op Swish Swish van Katy Perry.
In de zomer van 2018 verschijnen er twee samenwerkingen tussen Nicki Minaj en Ariana Grande: The Light Is Coming en Bed. Ook levert ze haar raps aan Fefe, de track van rapper 6ix9ine. Op 10 augustus verschijnt Queen, haar vierde studioalbum. Later in augustus is ze ook te horen op Goodbye, een samenwerking met Jason Derulo, David Guetta en Willy William. Met de binnenkomst van dat nummer in de Top 40 wordt ze de vrouwelijke rapper met de meeste hits: 14. Daarmee overtreft ze de 13 Top 40-hits die Missy Elliott tussen 1997 en 2005 op haar naam schreef. In oktober is Minaj te horen op Woman Like Me, de track van het Britse Little Mix.
Ruim een jaar later, aan het einde van 2019, maakt ze met Karol G de track Tusa.
Super Freak, de hit van Rick James uit 1981, wordt in 2022 onder handen genomen door Nicki en verschijnt in augustus als Super Freaky Girl. Songtekst
