Eind jaren tachtig werd Orville Richard Burrell ontdekt als hij, net verhuisd naar New York, zijn zangkwaliteiten laat horen op straat. Hij besloot echter eerst in dienst te gaan een vocht mee in de Golfoorlog. In 1993 kwam zijn eerste single, Oh Carolina, uit Engeland overwaaien naar ons land en daarmee wist hij meteen zijn eerste top 10-hit te scoren. Het album Boombastic werd in 1996 onderscheiden met een Grammy voor beste reggae album.

Zijn album Hot Shot, dat in 2000 verscheen, werd in de Verenigde Staten zes keer platina. Van dat album kwamen de hits It Wasn’t Me en Angel, waarmee hij totaal 14 weken de Top 40 wist aan te voeren. Daarmee overtrof hij als Jamaicaan de successen van Bob Marley & The Wailers, maar later moest hij wel Sean Paul laten passeren.

In 2003 stond Shaggy voor het laatst in de Top 40 met zijn tiende hit Hey Sexy Lady. Strength Of A Woman en Feel The Rush (Mascots Song) bleven steken in de Tipparade.

In 2014 is Shaggy terug in een samenwerking met Mohombi, Faydee en Costi op Habibi (I Need Your Love). Die track wordt in 2015 opnieuw uit de kast getrokken als I Need Your Love.

In het voorjaar van 2016 is hij één van de acts die te horen is op Don't You Need Somebody van RedOne.

In 2020 duikt Shaggy weer op met Banana dat door Qmusic wordt uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf en het Foute Anthem 2020. Banana, de samenwerking met Conkarah, wordt zijn derde nummer 1-hit. Ook heeft Shaggy dan in 4 verschillende decennia in de top 10 gestaan. Daarmee evenaart hij op dat moment 15 andere acts die dat record eerder evenaarden.
In 2021 weten Kriss Kross Amsterdam deze Jamaicaan te strikken en de Britse Conor Maynard voor de track Early In The Morning.
