Abel Tesfaye begint in 2010 met het uploaden van tracks naar YouTube onder de naam The Weeknd. In 2011 is die hoeveelheid nummers uitgegroeid tot een drietal mixtapes, waaruit later zijn debuutalbum Kiss Land wordt samengesteld. Het album komt in de Verenigde Staten op nummer 2 in de albumlijst en is in de eerste week van release al goed voor bijna 100.000 stuks.
In 2014 komt de track Devil May Cry komt terecht op de soundtrack bij The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Met Ariana Grande maakt hij Love Me Harder dat Alarmschijf wordt en aan het eind van het jaar in de Top 40 belandt.
In 2015 dient zich in ons land ook een solo-track van The Weeknd aan; Earned It is afkomstig uit de film Fifty Shades Of Grey en komt in 13 weken Top 40 tot de 15e plaats. Eind juni bereikt Can't Feel My Face de Top 40 en staat uiteindelijk drie weken op nummer 2. Die track is geproduceerd door Max Martin en afkomstig van zijn tweede studioalbum, Beauty Behind The Madness. Daarvan weet ook The Hills de eerste plaats van de Amerikaanse singlelijst te bereiken. Begin 2016 scoort hij met In The Night zijn vierde Top 40-hit.
Op 21 september 2016 onthult The Weeknd de titel van zijn derde studioalbum, Starboy, dat op 25 november moet verschijnen. Een dag later blijkt de titeltrack van dat album een samenwerking te zijn met het Franse duo Daft Punk als het nummer wordt uitgebracht. Het wordt in november de eerste nummer 1-hit van The Weeknd die vier weken de Top 40 weet aan te voeren. Ook verschijnt er dan een volgende samenwerking met Daft Punk, I Feel It Coming, dat door Radio 538 wordt uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. In april van 2017 wordt Rockin' de volgende single.
Begin 2018 maakt hij met Kendrick Lamar voor de soundtrack van de Marvel-film Black Panther de track Pray For Me. Niet veel later brengt hij de ep My Dear Melancholy uit waarvan Call Out My Name de openingstrack is. In januari van 2019 verschijnt Lost In The Fire, een samenwerking met de Franse dj en producer Gesaffelstein die hem eerder hlelp met productiewerk voor zijn ep.
After Hours is het vierde studioalbum van The Weeknd. Van dat album wordt Blinding Lights zijn tweede nummer 1-hit. Het nummer komt bij de vier grootste Top 40-hits aller tijden. Later worden ook In Your Eyes en Save Your Tears als singles gekozen, In de week waarin Save Your Tears in de Top 40 komt verschijnt ook Over Now, een samenwerking met Calvin Harris. Dat het samenwerken bevalt blijkt in november als hij meewerkt aan een nieuwe versie van Hawaí, de track van Maluma.
Begin augustus 2021 dropt hij de single Take My Breath wat afkomstig is van zijn volgende album. De single staat in het teken van de Olympische atletes van het Amerikaanse team. Hij slaat in oktober de handen ineen met Swedish House Mafia en samen leveren ze de track Moth To A Flame af. De track One Right Now is het resultaat van zijn samenwerking met Post Malone.
Begin januari 2022 verschijnt zijn vijfde studioalbum genaamd Dawn FM. Tegelijkertijd brengt hij het nummer Sacrifice van dit album uit. Met de single Out Of Time brengt hij in april de opvolger uit. Hij werkt eind 2022 samen met 21 Savage mee aan het nummer Creepin' van Metro Boomin. In diezelfde periode komt de langverwachte sequel Avatar: The Way of Water uit. The Weeknd is te horen op de soundtrack met het nummer Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength).
Samen met Ariana Grande brengt hij in februari 2023 de single Die For You Remix uit.
