"A Brand New Day" is geschreven door (de toen nog onbekende) Luther Vandross . In 1976 nam Luther het nummer op voor zijn album "Luther".
Het lied kent vele verwijzingen naar vrijheid en nieuwe mogelijkheden (vooral voor de Afro-Amerikaanse personages die waren bevrijd van de slavernij). "Free at last!" in de song is een verwijzing naar burgerrechten van activist Dr. Martin Luther King.
In België en Nederland wordt het nummer als single uitgebracht en bereikt de 1e plaats in de hitparade.
