OneRepublic wordt in 2002 opgericht door Zach Filkins en Ryan Tedder. Het tweetal krijgt versterking van Eddie Fisher, Drew Brown en Brent Kutzle en deelt in de beginjaren hun muziek via internet.

Producer Timbaland krijgt lucht van de kwaliteiten van de groep en helpt ze met hun debuutsingle, Apologize. De single bereikt ook in ons land, voor vier weken, de eerste plaats van de Top 40. In de jaren daarna bereikt de groep verscheidene malen de Top 40, maar een top-10-hit zit er niet meer in.

In 2013 verschijnt het derde album van de groep, Native, waarvan op dat moment Feel Again al in de tipparade had gestaan. Counting Stars, de derde single van het album, staat in de zomer van 2013 vier weken in de tipparade. In december wordt de single alsnog de zevende hitnotering in de Top 40 en weet uit te groeien tot de grootste hit van de groep. In het voorjaar van 2014 verschijnt Love Runs Out, een nieuwe track die later wordt toegevoegd aan de digitale release van het album Native. Met de track scoort OneRepublic voor de vierde keer de Alarmschijf.

Na afwezigheid van ruim 2 jaar is OneRepublic in 2016 terug met de Top 40-hit Wherever I Go, dat wordt opgevolgd door Kids. Die nummers zijn terug te vinden op het album Oh My My. In 2020 werkt de band samen met Kygo op de track Lose Somebody. De planning was dat in 2020 hun vijfde album genaamd Human uit zou komen. Door verschillende omstandigheden werd de release datum opgeschoven. Zij brengen wel in mei 2021 met de single Run de vijfde single van dit album uit. In augustus 2021 verscheen dan eindelijk het album. De single Sunshine droppen zij in november 2021.
Halverwege mei 2022 brengen ze de single I Ain’t Worried uit.
