In 1977 werd de groep opgericht door Brain McGee, Tony Donald, Charlie Burchill en Jim Kerr. De eerste naam die de band had was Johnnie & The Self Abusers.
In 1979 komen ze met hun eerste album Life In A Day. Het succes blijft nog even uit. Ze besloten om meer de commerciële popmuziek te gaan maken. Ze kregen versterking van Mel Gaynor (drummer) en vanaf 1982 kregen ze langzaam wat meer succes.
Het album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) komt uit in 1982. Met het nummer Promised You A Miracle, van dit album, maakten zij ook kennis met de Nederlandse Top 40.
In 1985 krijgen ze hun grote doorbraak met het nummer Don’t You (Forget About Me). Het nummer hoort bij de soundtrack van de film The Breakfast Club. Bassist Derek Forbes verlaat kort daarna de band.
In 1988 treden ze op in het Wembley Stadion ter ere van de 70e verjaardag van Nelson Mandela.
In 1989 scoren ze hun tweede nummer 1-hit tot nu toe in de Nederlandse Top 40 met het nummer Belfast Child wat afkomstig is van het album Street Fighting Years.
In de jaren 90 scoren ze nog wel een aantal hits zoals Stand By Love (1991) en She’s A River (1995), maar het werd wat rustiger rond Simple Minds. Dat kwam mede doordat toetsenist Michael MacNeil en drummer Mel Gaynor de band verlieten.
In 2002 komen ze met het album Cry en drummer Mel Gaynor keert weer terug in de band.
Voor het album Black & White 050505 werkten de heren in 2005 in de Wisseloord Studio’s in Hilversum.
In 2009 komen ze met het album Graffiti Soul. Met dit album komen ze voor het eerst in 14 jaar weer de UK Top 10 binnen.
Hun 24e album, Acoustic, verscheen in 2016.
Na alle wisselingen bestaat de bezetting op dit moment uit zanger Jim Kerr, gitarist Charlie Burchill, drummer Mel Gaynor, basgitarist Ged Grimes en toetsenist Andy Gillespie.
