Vanessa werd in 1983 uitgeroepen tot Miss America, maar moest die titel weer inleveren nadat bekend werd dat er naaktfoto's van haar in omloop zouden zijn.

Naast modellenwerk is ze ook filmactrice en zangeres. In 1988 scoort ze haar eerste hit met The Right Stuff, dan tot nummer 11 in de Top 40 weet te komen. Haar grootste hit scoort ze vervolgens in 1992: Save The Best For Last wordt een top 3-hit. Eind 1995 scoort ze een alarmschijf met het liedje Colors Of The Wind, uit de Disneyfilm Pocahontas. Het haalt nummer 9 in de Top 40, en is haar (voorlopig) laatste hit in Nederland.
